What is long-term care?

  • Chronic, "custodial" care for enduring/unchanging medical, physical and/or cognitive conditions. It is not acute or rehabilitative care.
  • Assistance or supervision needed for ADLs.
  • Can take place in the home, community-based settings, assisted living facilities, and nursing homes.

What is long-term care insurance?

  • Insurance designed to financially protect individuals from the high cost of long-term care.

Who pays the largest share?

  • Individual consumers
  • Medicaid
